On April 11th 2018 the Big Banana Car set off from Santa Monica in California on, what is being called, The World Needs More Whimsy Grand Tour.
Almost straight away it was in a crash!
I stopped for a red light on Santa Monica boulevard, right across from the iconic Beverly Hills police station, the one featured in the movie Beverly Hills Cop, but the car behind didn’t stop. There was no screeching of tyres. The car just drove into the back of the Big Banana Car!
His car unfortunately received severe front end damage.
If you look closely at the right side of the trailer hitch on the back of the banana car (yes the banana car has a trailer hitch) you can see a series of faint marks that were not there before.
Ron Kutt and I fabricated the rear bumper and its strength is due, in no small measure, to Rons welding skills.
(Just look at that wonderful shadow of a palm tree. Ah California how I love you so.)
It was amazing how quickly the police were on the scene. They must have been looking out the police station window and just leapt up and ran out the door.
No one was hurt and it was clearly the fault of the other driver so I was free to continue on my way.
Nothing could dampen my spirits on that sunny California afternoon, not even a minor “fender bender” as I continued onward knowing that the great American highway and a year of adventure lay ahead.
We have been working diligently on some new signs in the shop. Here is a sneak peak at the one for our lounge area in the Atom Punk style, as opposed the rest of the shop which is more Diesel Punk.
And Belated All Hallow’s….enjoy the remains of Fall!
This might be a bit long but I hope my friends and fans of The Big Banana Car will enjoy it. Shop girl Emily has been talking about the Amy Schumer show for the last couple of weeks, saying it would be great to give a B Car ride. Attempts to contact Amy’s people on social media were unanswered. She told me yesterday, the day of the show, that she wanted to take the banana car to the show to see if anything happens. I told her go for it. I was not interested and had decided to stay home. But she sent me a text at 7:30 and said she had a ticket for me. I found the motivation to get to Wings Stadium. Emily had gotten last minute tickets in the 4th row center!
Amy begins her act. Emily has a neon yellow sign that she holds up to get Amy’s attention and ask her to ride in the Big Banana Car. When the star mentions the Banana Car into the microphone the crowd cheered. I had tears in my eyes! In the 3 years we have had The Big Banana Car in Kalamazoo I have never felt so supported. We were disappointed, however, that Miss Schumer declined our invitation. We hope that someday she may reconsider!
I have heard so many great things people have said about the Banana Car but, the cheers from the large crowd last night was by far the best acknowledgment we have ever received! THANK YOU KALAMAZOO! And a huge thanks goes to Shopgirl. She was determined to have fun, and she knew it would be good exposure for us. I am very impressed with her tenacity and willingness to be a target of a jokes. We are glad to have her on board.
The weather is getting a bit brisk, BUT there is still time to take that ride your kids have been asking for! After school “Banana Car Pick-Ups” are a favorite of children of all ages. We can be scheduled for birthday parties, school events, or just a jaunt around the city.
Adults also dig The Big Banana Car! It is a perfect compliment to Ladies Night Out, Bachelorette/Bachelor parties, weddings, anniversaries, etc. You think of an event, we can probably do it!
Don’t delay! Schedule your experience now before it gets too cold! The Big Banana flies west for the winter.

Menards asked if we could help make their trucks go a little bit faster.
We said sure.
(Not really. We were given a drop tank by the Kalamazoo Air Zoo and this is how we got it back to the shop.)
(Not as exciting right)
This is how Tom sleeps in the Mutant Brothers workshop every night.
We just pulled the bus up next to him as he was waking up one day.
Thanks to Fran Dwight for the photo session.
